Guru asked:

Why are they? I understand you would want the male donor to have good genes with little history of medical problems and things like that. But I mean women also make their decision on whether the donor was a talented athlete or singer or musician or even a great thinker. But isn’t this absurd? I mean if you got Russel Crow’s sperm, does this mean your child will be a great actor? Or Elvis Presley’s sperm, would that make your child a great singer? Or even Albert Einstein’s sperm, would that make your child one of the most brilliant people to ever exist? And so on etc.

Because I think that these people are very good at what they do because they tried very hard in life to get their talents. I mean some people might be born with a nice voice but it is nowhere as perfect as it would have been without any practice and effort.

I totally agree…just because one or both of the parents have good genes based on what they do, have or dont have, doesnt mean the child is necessarily going to come out just like them. You never know what you are going to get. There is no such thing as a perfect child or being.

You have a point, BUT, genes make up a HUGE part of our traits, not just physically but in every aspect. If your father was a star athlete it doesn’t mean you will be, of course, however the predisposition may be there. The chances are better than if he wasn’t. It truly is amazing just how much is passed down genetically - more than we realize. The nurture can be just as important as you say but if you can have the predisposition why not take it?

Because they can pick. They give you a list of ***** donors with information about the person and are told to choose who you want the donor to be. No guarantees though of what the child will be like, obviously.

For the sake of argument, I’ll assume you’re straight. Let’s say you have a choice between two women, both of whom you love. You’re going to have kids with this woman, so you spend a lot of time trying to choose carefully.

Woman 1 and Woman 2 are equally nice and both have good genes. Woman 1 sits at home all day and plays videogames. Woman 2 just discovered the cure for some disease and graduated from an Ivy League university.

Which woman, assuming all other things were equal, would you choose if you weren’t going to be with her? You’d just get the outcome (the kid). Even if it’s only a slight chance, would you not go for the achiever?
