S Class asked:
I’m not talking about RB singers here. I’m talking about bands. It seems like 95% of people in popular bands these days are men. There are exceptions, like Rush, that feature some women. But honestly I’d say 95% is probably about a correct figure. Think of all the completely male bands that have dominated entertainment for the last 40 years: ACDC, The Rolling Stones, Green Day, Metallica, Blink-182, Nickelback, Pantera, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, The Who, ect. ect. ect. I mean, women listen to Rock/Punk/Classic Rock/Metal/Emo/Alt Rock/Pop Rock … How come the vast, vast, majority of musicians in these bands are men?
Lol Rebel I try to be constructive most of the time. Glad I could help.
As I said eight9 there are exceptions. However, the only bands I would call popular from your list are Paramore and Evenecense (sic) and even then only the singers of those bands are women. They could easily fall within the 5% I theorized.
Heart is also fairly well known I concede, though still well within the 5%.
Never heard of L7 or Tori Amos, and Madonna and Cher aren’t really in bands…. they are more so solo artists that tour with bands to back them up. Not only that they are pop singers.
And having talent doesn’t equate with being popular. Obviously there are talented female musicians. The question of why most people can’t name more than a few is the question here. Particularly with regards to Musicians, as oppose to singers.
EternalConfusion, I have heard of ArchEnemy, but I’m into Metal and I doubt most people have. Still that’s one member of the band, and she’s the singer. The other bands you mentioned I, and probably most average people have not heard of. Like I said there ARE TALENTED FEMALE MUSICIANS… its just most of them don’t seem to be popular.

Because women prefer to be the Diva!
We want all the attention!
i honestly think women do better as solo artists, and men are better in bands. neither is better, just different
This is a stereotype, but when I think of rock singers, I think of men immediately. Women singers to me are usually pop or country singers. If I ever do think of a woman in a band, I always think of her being the singer.
I don’t really know though. I guess it’s just a stereotype that most rock bands are male dominated. That’s probably why there’s a rocker ***** term.
Thank God, we’ve gotten a few real questions on here now.
I disagree. There are a lot of female bands out there but they tend to be in the pop genre. A more alternative rock band to concider would be Paramore cause the lead singer is Hayley Williams. And then there are bands like Evanescence and Nightwish. Also, the band Flyleaf. Then you have groups like Danity Kane, PCD, Girlicious…Some girl groups are more about *** appeal…others seem more like rock groups…and still others seem like pop such as the band Everlife. There are a ton of solo female singers out there, but that’s obvious. Anyways, a pretty well known female group is of course the band Heart. They are really awesomeness can come a little from back in they day.
Ever heard of L7, Tori Amos, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Madonna, Cher….there’s plenty of talented female musicians doing all types of music. You just haven’t been looking in the right places.
There’s OTEP, Arch Enemy and Lacuna Coil.
Otep, Lacuna Coil and Arch Enemy are more in the metal scene, and most people don’t listen to metal.
There’s also 7-year ***** that’s an all-female band. And, let’s not forget Kittie and DRAIN STH. But, there’s has beens.
Right now, OTEP is the metal band known for their bad-ass female singer that can growl just like a man.
It’s because all-female bands often aren’t taken seriously. Nearly every review I’ve read on them, the reviewer comments more on how they look or dress than their musicianship.
I’m surprised no one mentioned the Spice Girls, but they aren’t really a rock band but they were a very popular band.
You’ll usually only find women in pop or country.
Rock/metal genre is 95% male dominated like you said.
Hole, Rasputina, Bikini Kill, Switchblade Symphony, Pixies (has a girl singer as well as a guy singer), The Slits, X, Cocorosie, Siouxsie the banshees (very influential), Portishead, Die Form (industrial!), Cocteau Twins,…plus PJ Harvey who is not really a band but she is one of the best women musicians nowadays. these are not very popular bands, but I think a lot popular music ***** and all the good stuff is under the radar. Hey, the white stripes are pretty popular. I think it is hard to be a female musician because men don’t want to listen to things that sound too girly.
Even as lead vocalists, women’s chords are smaller, thus they lack range and depth.
Also lastly, because they don’t have testosterone. And it takes a lot of testosterone to pull this off.
Please note: when four women can get on stage and match my source. I will happily buy tickets.
