Are they any other black women out there that are tired of getting stereotyped (good or bad)?

I usually get more negative criticism from my own people if I don’t fit the stereotype of how they want me to act. For example, I happen to like Elton John’s music. I think he’s a talented musician, and all of a sudden I’m denying my blackness they tell me. I also like Ludacris, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, and Motown hits. What is the big deal? It’s like you have to fit the stereotype or you just don’t cut it. To be honest, I’m not big into rap and there are a lot of black artists I’ve never even heard of, but I guarantee you one thing I know my history and I could tell you more about Medgar Evers or Marion Anderson that a lot of people could. I’m tired of having to pretend for black men certain things I like when I don’t, b/c I’m afraid of criticism. I’ve been there too many times before. Then you have some white people(NOT ALL) that think all black women can sing. I get a lot of white guys that think that about me. I can’t even carry a tune. This is one crazy society.
I completely did not mean to post this question under this topic. That’s strange that they did. It doesn’t really fit though.

stereotypes exist because there is plenty of evidence to support them, especially when talking about blacks
I think there’s alot of stereotypes about alot of people.
Like asians being able to do kung-fu.
I know what you mean. It’s just like if you’re black and talk proper english then you’re acting white which is really ignorant to think that.
Sterotypes exist in anything. Period.Race, religion, gender. It is really because of peoples stupidity .I know it’s hard. Just because I live down south now, people think I’m a religious freak. Just because people are from down south I thought they all knew what the Bilbe Belt was.Stupid ! (Me not them.) But a lot of the people ,I found out, had never heard of it.Well, it’s the same with anything else. As long as there are people, there will be ones getting the wrong ideas and sterotyping others. For one reason or another.Ignore them and just be yourself. Let it be a pleasant surprise when they find out you are a whole other person !!
Sweety, DO YOU!!!! Those of of who are comfortable with ourselves could give a rats behind what the next person believes. But you’ll come to see that almost all stereotypes have been started by white people to make them selves appear more superior. I’m not hating, it’s just a fact. Like for example, you have a man from India and a Black man, to white people both are black men, but to the black man the Indian is Indian, vias versa, yet the Indian will fill somewhat superior because he can check white on an application box. Mexicians fill that way as well. The closer they feel to whites the more superior they start to act. All in an attempt not to become a stereotype. Just be yourself. I can’t sing or fry chicken, but when I go to Golden Corral, all the white folks are eating watermelon!!! This is one crazy society!!
This is a great place to post this..
The fact that stereotypes **** no matter what they are.
I cant be *** since I drive truck and don’t seem ***.
Yep this is one crazy society!
I’m stereotyped for a lot of different reasons but you know I don’t let it get to me. There are people in this world who will always find something about you to complain about, you just have to ignore them and be you and be happy.
Uncle Fisty is full of ****. Stereotypes are hurtful and show people’s stupidity. I don’t fit any stereotype and I am proud of that. I am a free spirit and was never one to allow other people to rearrange me. I am who I am… nothing more… nothing less. I suggest you stop allowing people to mess with your brain. You are exactly how you are supposed to be and furthermore I see nothing wrong with listening to Elton John. Personally one of my favorites is Eric Clapton. I am 46 and was raised in a middle class family in Illinois. Back in the day that’s all there was… white radio stations. I loved music and could care less who sang it. I even liked the Partridge Family at one time. You no longer have to go around explaining why you like what you like. When you walk in authority all the stupid situations fall to the wayside. Don’t be afraid of criticism. What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. One thing I do suggest is changing your crowd. What you put out… you get back. I mean cmon…. white people think you can sing because you are Black… idiots! Sometimes you have to dissern people. They say things to get a reaction from you and see how it affects you. They TRY to get under your skin… kinda like Uncle Fisty and every other troll/ ****** on here. Let it go Sista. Don’t let other people affect you to the point that you live in fear. Come out of your shell and live how God intended for you to live. Knowing your Black History and being able to tell a man NO is wonderful… however people are not perfect. On occasion they even ****. Walk in authority, pray about your situation and just know… these people will all be a thing of the past in a few years. If you want to be an astronaut… go for it! If you want to be a musician.. writer… playwright… opera diva… entertainer… historian… ambassador… congresswoman, or poet… the choice is yours.
